In praise of doing things again.
Once a week for the last three years I have made the same journey from a tube station to a place of education. For a self-employed person of three decades standing, this represents a huge commitment. One can spend years avoiding conformity before realising that some rebellions are just clichés of their own, and I consider it a blessing that one of the many things I have gained in this belated return to predictable behavior has been an enhanced appreciation for the beauties of routine.
How I get to the tube is a matter over which I have some sovereignty, but I always emerge on foot and there a only a few ways to vary the journey ahead, but this is where things get interesting, because the opportunity for variance within a ritual calls forth a particular kind of creativity, I believe.
